ABOUT THE GAME & APPLYING

Yes! Seventies is a GPSL, or Group Private Storyline. What this means is that we are not open and will not be advertising to the general public. In order to join, you'll need an invite from someone who is already a part of ~seventies.

By doing this, we hope to keep the game relatively small and intimate so that we have the luxury of exploring the world we're building at our own pace with the people we most trust.

~Seventies is an invite-only GPSL that will begin in 1978, during the first wizarding war. In this game, we hope to explore the fundamentals of the world JKR set up for us whiel also taking liberties that may take us into AU territory. We want to strip characters of any plot armor they might have and play this game in an action vs. consequences enviornment.

At the current time, we don't have any specific time-frame for when this game will end.

Absolutely! However, there are a couple of stipulations. Because of the small, intimate nature of this game, we've invited our players to let us know if there is anyone they might be uncomfortable with playing in such a small game. Before you ask your friend if they would like to join, we'd like to ask you to to please shoot an e-mail off to us (seventiesmods@gmail.com) letting us know who you'd like to invite. We'll cross reference it with our list and if their name isn't on it, we'll welcome you to invite them, no problem.

Everything that has happened canonically prior our game start (XX XXXX, 1978) will have happened. At game start, we're going off the rails and into the weeds; if something happens that causes the course of the game to deviate from the outcomes JKR has set up, so be it!

It can be!

We'll lay it out straight for you: in a war setting where sides are playing to win, sometimes people aren't fair with the consequences their characters should be getting. If your Death Eater or Order Member is caught or could feasibly be discovered doing something illegal, there may be consequences to that. If your Order sympathetic character is shooting their mouth off to someone who has Death Eatery connections, there may be some kind of consequence to be had.

This doesn't mean everyone needs to be caught doing something EVERY TIME THEY DO IT, we would just like everyone to keep this in mind as the game progresses! If you have any questions about potential outcomes in any situation, we encourage you to reach out to your fellow members or the mods oocly to say, "ehy! Sally wants to TP Bellatrix's house. What are some ways we can go about this?"

We will obviously not allow for the actual death or dismemberment of your character without your consent (see the 'don't godmod' rule)', but there can and will be consequences if your character decides to break laws/go up against a rival faction/betray their own team/etc. In short, communicate!

You may apply for any character that exists during the time of our game (1978).

We do, however, feel that it's only fair to let you know that some characters may have more plot than others, especially due to the small nature of the game. You may be best served picking someone who has close ties to someone in the Ministry, the Order, or a Death Eater. That isn't to say that you aren't welcome to pick someone up who works the day shift at a pub, and we will do our best to get them invovled as best we can. After all, a big part of war games is also the life of citizens and how the cruelty of war doesn't discriminate.

Not necessarily! If your character is dead prior to game start (14 July, 1978), then yes. That character is dead and will remain dead. But everything after that is up for debate. That isn't to say that there will be NO death, but we're fine with seeing how everything goes (see: actions vs. consequences) rather than requiring anyone to abide by canonical deaths on a canonical timeline.

That's fine, within reason! If that's the kind of plot you want to pursue, we're happy to help come up with ways to make that happen.

Well. Yes and no. It is a war game: there are two sides fighting against each other, hoping to be the "winner." Casualties will happen, and sad topics are bound to crop up because of it.

HOWEVER!! Although this is a war game and death is to be expected, we ask that you please be mindful when approaching certain topics as to keep griefwanking and torture porn in check. War and the tragedies that come with it isn't a competition.

THE JOURNAL SYSTEM

The idea for the magical journals could have been credited to James Potter and Sirius Black, if inventor Bertram Aubrey* didn't hate them both so much. He was the silent fifth presence in the Marauders' dormitory at school, finding the four of them as insufferable as they found him boring. But James and Sirius had in their possession a set of two-way mirrors that they used to communicate between detentions no matter where they were in the castle and something about that stayed with Bertram through his beginning years at Hogwarts. Many of his studies (and by extension, grades) were forgone has he worked on his passion project.

And, hey, it paid off. Freshly Graduated Bertram pitched his idea to a company called the MagiTech Corporation, who released the first line of magical journals to Flourish and Blott's on 14 July. These journals are a nondescript book that allows people to write to others without having to send an OWL post, saving both time, money, and the well being of the owls themselves. There are still some charms to tweak and work out in this journalling system, but there's no doubt that these books will be popular.

*if you are interested in playing Bertram and want to change his name, that's fine! Just let us know.

These journals are BRAND NEW, which means that there are going to be a lot of bugs to work out. As of now, these journals are plain and can only communicate with other people on a basic level. This means that as of 14 July), WARDS DO NOT EXIST. EVERYTHING IS PUBLIC.

Each journal purchased is registered to the person who bought it. If it's a gift, the journal will not be able to be used until the person for whom it was intended goes to Flourish and Blott's to register it for themselves.

Any comments made with a journal automatically include the owner's name. As of right now, journals can be opened and read by everyone. There are no security measures

Yes. When a new update or feature is available, the next blank page in your character's journal will read "New Feature Available." At first, chances are the journal company will want to capitalize on profits and make people BUY new journals.

This section will be updated as new features roll out.

THIS WILL ONLY APPLY ONCE WARDS ARE DISCOVERED IN GAME.

WARDS are charms meant to protect your journal entries and comments from being seen by anyone other than for whom they are intended. You may ward to yourself, another person, or a specific group of people (see: The Order, Death Eaters, etc). In order to ward a specific group, your character must know who is in that group. For example, The Minister couldn't just ward "The Order," and see who comes to pick up.

When warding to a more general group, further knowledge may be required. You MAY make wards that appear to be general, such as, 'friends,' as long as you include a link to a key that lists who their friends are. For an example, please click here.

Once your character has created a ward or has otherwise commented, the ward cannot later be crossed out, unwarded, or removed.

Wards cannot be broken into by a third party. The only way Wards can be read by someone other than for whom they are intended is if Character B gets their hands on Character A's journal and reads it directly from that source.

STRIKEOUTS indicate text that has been scratched out. The words that have been struck out cannot be read. They appear either as scratches over text or as an inkblot.

Using a "reaction icon" is a way for a player to acknowledge that their character has seen something, but has not commented. This is a good way to avoid dogpiling in IC arguments, to show acknowledgement even though your character does not want to reply textually, or otherwise react to a posted media event. These icons cannot be seen ICly and are for OOC use only.

[...] Indicates a passage of time in first person communication. It cannot be read IC; it is meant to show hesitation.

These are what we're going to refer to as STAGE DIRECTIONS. These can be utilized in journal, notes, or other forms of first person communication!

If there is a physical action you would like to show before, during, or after character writes their comment, you may do so by utilizing this method.

For example, in an entry where James and Lily are in the same room but are talking together over the journals, an exchange with stage directions might look like this.

LILY: Remus just left. Could you lock the door after him, please?
JAMES: [ shuffling can be heard from the next room as well as an exaggerated groan as he gets up from off the couch. a few moments pass ] Yeah, done.

Whenever you see someone using courier new, this means that someone is using a DictaQuill.

This is the equivalent of using a speech-to-text method. As a result, some words may not translate accurately or they may pick up words your character doesn't intend to actually send. Have fun!

Yes! Your character can paste or tape pictures into journals and have it show up. If it is a big picture, we ask that you please put it under cut text.

The journals will also display anything that was spilled on them: water, blood, spaghetti sauce.

THE COMMUNITY

Yes! Assuming that people choose to post their log in completion, you may absolutely post comments, gifs, or whatever comments of general encouragement. We feel this is a great way to show solidarity with your fellow players!

Instead of having a chatwide game on AIM or GCHAT, the mods will be posting a 'chatter post,' in the OOC. We will post new ones whenever the comments on the old one gets out of control. We welcome and encourage all of our players to post in it about anything they want! This way, you don't have to stay on any one singular topic but still have a place to talk to the game at large. Please put subjects in the headers to help people sort through navigation, and pleaase utilize NSFW warnings where necessary.

Sure! We have a coding tag in the OOC community; you're more than welcome to share your creations with us. Goodness knows not all of us are code-savvy and could use it. ;(

Yes, absolutely! In fact, we encourage it!

Our Plot Calendar, unlike a lot of PCALs, is designing to be living. That is, as events organically crop up during the month, we will be editing the plot calendars. By doing this, we hope to make it easy for people who have not been with us since the beginning to easily catch up.

Good question! We prefer that any -LARGE SCALE- IC/OOCs where in-person interaction is the driving factor to be posted at least two days prior to the actual event in order to give everyone enough time to reply before the event happens in real time. In this way, we can already know what happens on an ic level instead of having it be three days after the fact and still be like, "um. I think my character is going to do this but I'm not sure yet..."

All that we ask is that actual journal entries and ic mentions of the event outside of the ic/ooc wait until the day of! :)

IC/OOCs are more intensive than Flash Reactionaries; they usually require a lot of back and forth interaction. Flash Reactionaries can be a simple post saying, "Hey! Just so you know, Lily was feeling under the weather at work. If anyone wants to have gotten sick because of her, that's fine. :P" or, "Marlene brought cupcakes the Mungo's today! Enjoy!"

Flash Reactionaries give people something quick to respond to that doesn't require a ton of foresight and planning while IC/OOCs require set-up and know-how, basically.

ORDER OF THE PHOENIX

The Order of the Phoenix was founded by Albus Dumbledore in 197X as a means to combat Voldemort's increasing threat and power. Their purpose can be surmised with three points: to oppose the Death Eaters, to protect Muggles and Muggleborns, and to promote equality and justice. Oftentimes their methods are outside of the law, warranting the need for secrecy.

Existing Order of the Phoenix members submit potential recruits to senior members. If approved, Albus Dumbledore issues the invitation. If a member of the Order Support wishes to become a full member of the Order of the Phoenix, Albus Dumbledore makes that decision.

Because no one has any set dates when they were recruited, we decided to leave it up to the player! If you want it to happen in game, cool. If you want it to have already happened, also cool! Just make sure you indicate it on their application and we'll get them added (or abstain!) to the appropriate pages accordingly.

We're totally open to "non-canonical" recruitment as long as it happens in a way that is organic and makes sense!

The corporeal patronus is a test of Dark Magic use-- those who dabble in Dark Magic are less likely to be able to cast one. In addition to this, members must be able to utilize their patronus as a means of sending a message, which is an invaluable skill where journals, owls, or other means of communication are inaccessible.

Some people, for their own reasons, can't or are otherwise unwilling to fully commit to doing anything more than offering support where they can. Their help is still greatly valued and appreciated, and members of the Order have come to rely on them.

All Order of the Phoenix members know other Order of the Phoenix members.

Order members may know the identities of Support members (with some exceptions, player decision pending). Generally speaking, senior and leading Order members will know more than younger members.

Support members may know the identities of Order members (with some exceptions, player decision pending.

THE DEATH EATERS

Because no one has any set dates when they were recruited, we decided to leave it up to the player! If you want it to happen in game, cool. If you want it to have already happened, also cool! Just make sure you indicate it on their application and we'll get them added (or abstain!) to the appropriate pages accordingly.

Yes, with stipulations! Please be reasonable. Not everyone can be inner circle, and MOST people are going to be outer circle. If your character does not have a useful job in ADDITION to having some kind of connection for information, chances are they aren't going to be Inner Circle, especially if they're young and spry!

Only Voldemort knows who everyone is in their entirety, and there's definitely a level of secrecy abound. Although Death Eaters may be aware of who other Death Eaters are, there may be some descrepincies when it comes to knowing with certainty who is a part of the "inner circle" and who is just "outer circle." Some people like others to know they're a part of the inner circle while others prefer to maintain a level of secrecy unless otherwise directed by Voldemort.

We're totally open to "non-canonical" recruitment as long as it happens in a way that is organic and makes sense!

THE MEDIA

Fantastic! That's fine with us. Go ahead and write it up and post it using an "NPC" name.

Sure! All that we ask is that you PLEASE get permission from the player about the character you're writing about.

Even better! Go ahead and leave it in the dropbox! Give us the name, the author (if applicable!), a short synposis, and, if it's for the WWN, give us a time of the day and the day(s) it comes on!
